A surprise for me was the major focus on food production, when discussing locally produced. For us in T.A.P. the production of food is the most central (of course, since that’s what we do). But for most of the other participants, the field where you felt that you could make a conscious choice as a consumer was in food!!  Maybe it’s what we buy on an everyday basis that makes our consciences most heavy. Maybe we can relate easier to how our decisions effect the environment when thinking of carrots in a field.

 What we eat changes the landscape! A statement was made that tomatoes from Holland are more clomate friendly than a tomatoe grown in a greenhouse somewhere in Sweden. Meaning: dutch tomatoes are better. The end. But that’s only one perspective! I as a consumer may believe that contributing to Swedish economy and supporting my fellow gardeners as more important. Again: What we buy affects the landscape!

The day was interesting. And we all agreed that the question of local production is very complex. When does local stop being local and become global? And how can jeans from France be local at the same time as frames from Latvia aren’t? Gives you something to think about, right?

The plots are reproducing! Be aware.  

In the coming weeks you will spot plots emerging at Rådhustorget in Copenhagen and at Gustav Adolfs torg in Malmö as a part of the municipality of Malmö´s intent to pay attention to the climate meeting COP15 at Bella centre in Copenhagen which starts next week. We will build plots as a comment to the usage of space in cities, again and again introducing green features as a factor to reduce a rapid climate change, and continue with our commitment to demonstrate how easy and not space-demanding it can be to produce your own vegetables.  

We won’t be stopped by the climate (not by the fact that it is practically winter, nor the fact that the global climate is changing)! We will keep on cultivating.  

So, come join us! In Copenhagen the 14th  (5 pm to 7 pm) and the 16th  (same time) of December. Or if you are located in Malmö and want to stop by for some sunflower seed, the two following weeks will be the time. On the 8th (4 pm to 6 pm) and on the 15th (3 pm to 5 pm) we will conduct a workshop at Gustav Adolfs torg in the very heart of Malmö. We will be there, spreading the beautiful message of urban farming and the unlimited possibilities of small, cultivated plots.

I do admit that it is a rather strange and somewhat inconvenient time of year for vegetables. Most of the few edible things till in soil are soon to be harvested. But we won’t let a small thing like seasons stop us from doing what’s necessary! Dressed in winter jackets and suitable garden glows we will complete our horticultural and political mission! The Allotment Plot is still going strong, constantly spreading! Soon in a city near you. And you are, as always, more than welcome to join us!
